The National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) is dedicated to educating professionals and the public on the essential nature of parks and recreation. Fuel Up to Play 60 is the in-school nutrition and physical activity program founded by the National Dairy Council (NDC) and the National Football League. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has joined the effort, as well as many businesses and industry leaders. This comprehensive program focuses on promoting healthier eating and more physical activity opportunities school-wide. Students and adults work together to select and implement a series of "Plays" that result in long-term changes in these two important areas. Along the way, students become empowered to lead - by making healthy decisions, taking action for change and encouraging friends to do the same.
PLAY 60 encourages kids to find their own ways to get active - whether it's taking advantage of the local playground, riding their bikes, or establishing a walking club with friends. PLAY 60 presents organized sports - including youth football - as a very good way to get active, but not the only way. Since the inception of PLAY 60 in 2007, PLAY 60 has been implemented in more than 70,000 schools, after-school and team-based initiatives. To date, the NFL has committed over $200 million to youth health and fitness through media time for PSAs, programming, and grants. During the 2010 football season the NFL, all 32 NFL teams and players have hosted more than 800 PLAY 60 youth health and fitness events.
The United States Tennis Association's National Junior Tennis and Learning Network (NJTL) chapters nationwide provide free or low-cost programming for youth during out-of-school time (before and after-school, during vacations and over the summer). This growing network of community-based organizations strengthens the core of local communities by using tennis and education to help keep kids safe, healthy and strong. NJTL chapters offer a variety of programming, such as tutoring, nutrition counseling and anti-drug education - all centered on engaging and interactive on-court group activities.
